Guadalajara, Mexico, Dec 19 (efe-epa).- Juan Luis Lagunas, well-known on the social networks and nicknamed the "Pirate of Culiacan," was shot to death in a bar in the town of Zapopan, in the western Mexican state of Jalisco, police confirmed to EFE on Tuesday.

The young man was attacked by a group of gunmen as he arrived at a bar in the community of Los Cajetes, on the outskirts of the towns of Zapopan, Tlaquepaque and Tlajomulco, Tlaquepague police said.

According to eyewitnesses, Lagunas at first tried to shield himself behind the bar owner but was quickly cornered by the attackers and shot between 15 and 20 times, most of those bullets hitting him in the head.

The bar owner, whose identity was not provided but who was about 25 years old, was wounded in the attack but got to the hospital on his own, only to die there a few hours later, the Jalisco Prosecutors Office said.

The attackers fled after the attack and their whereabouts are unknown.

Although Lagunas, 21, still has not been identified by his family members, police said that the victim has a tattoo on his right hand just like the one the Pirate of Culiacan showed in his social network videos.

Born in northern Sinaloa state, Lagunas became famous after posting photos and videos on the social networks showing him consuming alcohol and displaying weapons.

After gaining notoriety, he began received invitations from singers and musical groups to attend their concerts.

Although authorities do not know the motive for the attack, a video is currently circulating on the social networks in which Lagunas sends messages critical of Nemesio Oseguera, alias "El Mencho," the head of the Jalisco New Generation drug cartel.
