Punk legend Patti Smith shows documentary at Tribeca Film Festival

New York, USA, Apr 23 (efe-epa).- US Punk legend Patti Smith premiered her new documentary at the Tribeca Film Festival on Monday and took the occasion to perform briefly on stage, alongside her friends Bruce Springsteen and R.E.M's lead singer Michael Stipe.

"Horses" (1975), Smith's debut album which began with the opening line "Jesus died for someone's sins, but not mine", inspired director Steven Sebring to name the new documentary as "Horses: Patti Smith and her Band"

The documentary captures moments from Smith's 2016 concerts in Los Angeles, which was part of the 40th-anniversary tour celebrating her debut album, including previously unseen moments from backstage.

The artist performed several of her famous songs, including "Gloria (In Excelsis Deo)" from her debut album which Smith adapted from Van Morrison's original version with an excerpt from her poems.

After graduating from high school, she joined a factory, a job she hated but inspired her first songs, and soon after gave birth to a girl in 1967. Smith decided to give the baby up for adoption.

That same year, she left New Jersey and moved to Manhattan, where she met the "artist of her life," photographer Robert Mapplethorpe, with whom she began a complicated relationship marked by his homosexuality and the poverty in which they lived.

The portraits that Mapplethorpe took of Smith served as covers for her albums and, even after they broke up, the pair remained friends until the photographer died of AIDS in 1989.

One of Smith's most famous portraits could be found on the cover of her debut album "Horses", in which the punk star posed in a suit with her usual androgynous characteristics.

Smith described the recording process of her first album as "hell" and regretted choosing John Cale, founding member of American rock band "The Velvet Underground", as her producer due to their distinct personalities which resulted in constant arguments.

"All I was really looking for was a technical person. Instead, I got a total maniac artist. I wanted to choose an expensive watercolor painting and instead I got a mirror," Smith once confessed.

At the age of 71, Smith is known as a music legend who composed true punk music and influenced the works of many other famous artists like U2, R.E.M, The Smiths, Sonic Youth and Madonna.
