On Wednesday, May 9, 2018, Statesboro’s Tormenta FC competed in the first round of the 2018 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup against its rival and the home team, the Myrtle Beach Mutiny. Tormenta FC came out on top with a final score of 2-1 with two goals achieved by players Jad Arslan and Toni Soler. This win sends Tormenta FC to the second round of the tournament to play against the Charleston Battery on Wednesday, May 16th.

This is Tormenta’s first appearance at the Open Cup, and the team is eager for the chance to win this prestigious tournament. The team qualified to participate by placing fourth in the South Atlantic Division of the PDL last season. In regard to the win today, Assistant Coach Kari Sveinsson says, “I am incredibly proud of the guys and their performance at today’s game, especially the team members from last year who made participating in this tournament possible. Most importantly, I have to thank Darin and Netra Van Tassell for being essential pieces of how far Tormenta FC has come in three short years.”

Advancing to the second round of this tournament is a great feat for Tormenta FC, as it is only in its third year as a franchise. Not only will Tormenta, a PDL team, get the opportunity to play against a professional team, out of the USL division Charleston Battery. The upcoming game in Charleston will have significantly more viewers and fans, along with more scouts looking at potential players. Winners of this game will advance to the third round of the 2018 U.S Open Cup.

Tormenta FC hopes to see all its Hilton Head fans cheering them on at their game against the Charleston Battery. The game will take place on Wednesday, May 7th at 7:00 pm in the MUSC Health Stadium in Charleston, South Carolina. Fans can contact David Ball at dball@tormentafc.com for information about buying tickets for this exciting game.
