Colombia unveils new passports incorporating security features

Bogota, Jul 12 (efe-epa).- The Colombian Foreign Ministry unveiled this week a new passport that will start to be issued on July 15, which incorporates new security features and contains depictions of sites that are part of Colombia's cultural and natural heritage.

Bogota, Jul 12 (efe-epa).- The Colombian Foreign Ministry unveiled this week a new passport that will start to be issued on July 15, which incorporates new security features and contains depictions of sites that are part of Colombia's cultural and natural heritage.

The decision to modernize the Colombian passport was made as a result of a recommendation by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), Foreign Minister Maria Angela Holguin said during a presentation Wednesday, adding that the change does not require Colombians to immediately renew their older machine-readable and digital passports.

"The new passport will start to be issued on July 15 at government offices in Bogota and in Colombian consulates. It is important to note that the older machine-readable and digital passports will continue to be valid and that renewing them will not be mandatory," Holguin said.

The only passports that will have to be renewed are those with pink pages and a color photograph, while the rest will continue to be valid until their date of expiration.

Since 2010, when the current administration took office, very few changes had been made to Colombian passports, which were "essentially the same" as before until these new upgrades, Holguin said.

The new passport will include new security features such as raised print, a hologram of the person and microprint, while the data page will be manufactured with several polycarbonate layers to prevent it from being detached or damaged.

In addition, each page of the passport booklet depicts detailed depictions of Colombia's cultural and natural heritage, including the Caño Cristales river, the Tatacoa Desert, Las Lajas Sanctuary, Malpelo Island, and Tayrona National Park.
