Santiago, Jul 12 (efe-epa).- The headquarters of the Chilean maritime authority in Antarctica was destroyed early Thursday in a fire, the Latin American country's navy said.

Nobody was injured in the blaze, according to a navy statement.

The 10 naval personnel stationed at the facility battled the flames with help from a Chilean air force contingent who responded to the initial distress call, but were unable to stop the fire from reducing the complex to ashes.

The navy outpost was located on King George Island in the South Shetlands chain, roughly 4,000km (2,500mi) south of Santiago.

With their living quarters destroyed, the staff are being lodged at the Chile Antarctic Institute's Escudero base, the foreign ministry said on Twitter.

The maritime authority is responsible for monitoring Chilean vessels in Antarctic waters and coordinating the response in emergency situations.
