Chilean navy rescues whale trapped in a fishing net

Santiago, Aug 14 (EFE).- The Chilean navy said Tuesday that it managed to rescue a whale that was stuck in a fishing net near Navarino Island, some 3,400km (2,112mi) south of Santiago.

Santiago, Aug 14 (EFE).- The Chilean navy said Tuesday that it managed to rescue a whale that was stuck in a fishing net near Navarino Island, some 3,400km (2,112mi) south of Santiago.

After fishermen in the area sent out an alarm, the whale was spotted near the Paso Goree marine channel, the navy said in a statement.

The rescue was undertaken by the crew of the patrol boat Alacalufe and divers from the rescue unit in Puerto Williams, Navarino.

The divers had to swim dangerously close to the scared and agitated whale to cut away the net.

"After about an hour, the divers were able to free the whale, despite the dangers of being in the water with such a large whale," Capt. Cesar Quiroga, commandant of the Beagle Naval District and maritime governor of Puerto Williams, said in the statement.

Quiroga urged the fishing community to be careful to remove all their nets after expeditions to avoid entrapping whales.
