Martino expresses interest in coaching Colombia, says no contacts yet

Bogota, Sep 12 (EFE).- Argentine coach Gerardo "Tata" Martino said Wednesday that taking the Colombian national soccer team's helm was an "attractive" opportunity, but no one had contacted him yet about the job.

Bogota, Sep 12 (EFE).- Argentine coach Gerardo "Tata" Martino said Wednesday that taking the Colombian national soccer team's helm was an "attractive" opportunity, but no one had contacted him yet about the job.

"I like the idea of being one of the options to coach the Colombian national team," Martino told Caracol Radio's "El Alargue" program, adding that his focus was on Major League Soccer (MLS) club Atlanta United even though his future with the US team was uncertain.

The former Argentine national team coach said he was flattered that people were mentioning him as a candidate to lead Colombia's squad but that he had "a current contract with Atlanta United."

"I'm happy to be with this franchise, which has treated me well and where I work without pressure," the 55-year-old Martino said.

Martino said he did not have an agent or manager, so no one can contact him that way.

"They haven't called me (from Colombia) and it's difficult through representatives because I don't have any. If they don't talk to me, they can't talk to anyone else that has authority over me and my job," Martino said.

The former FC Barcelona manager praised Colombia's last coach, Jose Pekerman, who spent almost seven years with the national team.

Martino noted that before Pekerman, another Argentine, became Colombia's coach, he was considered for the job but had other priorities at the time.

On Sept. 4, Pekerman announced that he was stepping down as Colombia's coach after a stint in which the national team qualified for both the 2014 World Cup in Brazil and the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
