Buenos Aires, Nov 23 (efe-epa).- Numerous quotes associated with the long rivalry between Buenos Aires clubs Boca Juniors and River Plate, who are tied 2-2 after the Nov. 11 first leg of the 2018 Copa Libertadores final, have stood the test of time.
We look at some of them on the eve of the second leg, which will decide the winner of the latest edition of South America's premier club soccer tournament.
"I would pay to play against Boca," attacking midfielder Ariel Ortega said after personal problems led to his being temporarily dropped from River Plate's squad in 2007 by then-head coach Daniel Passarella.
"Boca played like Boca and River were River. They played a great first half and then their panties fell down," a 36-year-old Diego Maradona said after the Xeneizes' 2-1 away win on Oct. 25, 1997, over the Millonarios at El Monumental Stadium. That game in his second stint with Boca was the Argentine legend's last professional match.
"They don't like me and I don't like them. I'm Boca's enemy! They hate me because I defended the River jersey to the death," said midfielder Reinaldo Merlo, who played 15 years for River Plate from 1969 to 1984 and later went on to coach the club on two separate occasions.
"It's the most beautiful game in the world," attacking midfielder Juan Roman Riquelme, who played two stints for Boca Juniors, said in 2014 about Argentina's Superclasico.
