Heliport opens in Dominican capital

Santo Domingo, Jan 11 (efe-epa).- Dominican President Danilo Medina inaugurated on Friday the Helipuerto de Santo Domingo, which has three takeoff and landing platforms for helicopters.

The heliport "has a design that harmonizes with the environment and its roof is covered in vegetable grass, which makes it an environmentally friendly building," Medina's office said in a statement.

"The Dominican Republic has the most advanced heliport in the Caribbean, Central America, South America and other countries around the world," Marino Collante, executive director of the airport authority, said during the opening ceremony.

The heliport also has room to accommodate five helicopters for long-term stays.
