Uruguay's Vecino undergoes medical tests, misses Copa America practice

Belo Horizonte, Brazil, Jun 17 (efe-epa).- The Uruguayan national soccer team, which made its Copa America debut over the weekend with a 4-0 blowout of Ecuador at Mineirao Stadium in Belo Horizonte, practiced on Monday before leaving for Porto Alegre.

Midfielder Matias Vecino is undergoing medical tests and missed practice.

The squad took to the practice field at the Cidade do Galo, which belongs to Brazilian league club Atletico Mineiro, just 13 hours after beating Ecuador.

On Thursday, Uruguay will play Japan at Arena de Gremio in Porto Alegre.

Vecino was taken to a Belo Horizonte hospital to undergo tests after experiencing discomfort during the 80 minutes he was on the field against Ecuador on Sunday.

Midfielder Federico Valverde came off the bench and took over for Vecino.

"Vecino has muscle pain and we'll see tomorrow what his condition is," Uruguayan national team coach Oscar Washington Tabarez said.

The starters from Sunday's match arrived at the practice facility in a good mood, laughing and joking.

Tabarez had the starters practice in the gym, where they were joined for the first 30 minutes of exercises by the goalkeepers and substitutes.

Later, the substitutes and goalkeepers took to the field to practice passing and setting up plays, followed by a short practice match in a reduced portion of the pitch.

Atletico Mineiro had some parting gifts for Uruguay, presenting Tabarez with a club jersey and cap to mark his squad's last practice session at Cidade do Galo.

After playing Japan on Thursday, Uruguay, currently leading Group C with three points, will wrap up the group phase with a match against Chile at Rio de Janeiro's Maracana Stadium on June 24.

On Monday, Japan and Chile play at Sao Paulo's Morumbi Stadium in Group C action.
