We Need to Be Living by The Ideals and Principles That America Was Founded Upon!

(La Isla Magazine, July 2018) ~ HHI, SC.  By Eric Esquivel.  This year, as I reflect on where we are as a country and what our independence means to me, I find myself struggling more than ever to understand what is going on in our society today.  America was founded on more than laws alone. Our true saving grace was about our ideals: America stood for something larger than itself — for freedom, human rights and the rule of law as universal principles.

Our true saving grace was about our ideals: America stood for something larger than itself — for freedom, human rights and the rule of law as universal principles.

That’s the legacy our parents and grandparents and generations created for us, and it’s something we must protect for the generations that are to come. But we must do more than just say “this isn’t who we are”; we must prove it — through our policies, our laws, our actions, and our votes. What has become of our leadership and the once great America that brought people together from different backgrounds to use their differences to innovate and solve big problems?

Children are children, no matter whose children they are. As our immigration article in this issue says, the June 20th executive order simply pays lip service to the outcry from Americans to stop the cruel and unnecessary practice at the border. The worst part is that there is currently no executive plan on how to reunite the thousands of immigrant children, scattered throughout the country, with their parents. Asylum seekers are entitled, by our own current laws, to due process.

Separating immigrant families, demeaning minorities, and both political parties constantly stonewalling one another have all lead to no real solution. This is getting old. Thanks to volunteers with Lowcountry Indivisible and Lowcountry Immigration Coalition for their support in planning local events to create awareness about a humane and comprehensive immigration reform. Only by creating spaces for a respectful debate will Americans be able to move towards immigration reform. Decades of inaction by our elected officials have put us in this position; now it’s time to move forward with solutions.

How should Congress go about solving our immigration issue? How will you celebrate your independence? How will you stand up for your rights and your neighbor’s rights? Thoughts, comments and ideas are always welcome, but please, be courteous and respectful.

“To be an American is to have a shared commitment to an ideal—that all of us are created equal, and all of us deserve the chance to become something better.”

~ President Abraham Lincoln
